Back Together with Heidi Happy!

When I first heard the music of Heidi Happy it was very soothing to my ears. Heidi Happy is an acoustic folk pop artist from Switzerland. Priska Zemp was born a musical talent. Her mother is a classically trained soprano, her father sings in several choirs. In April 2005 Priska Zemp decided to pursue her solo career as Heidi Happy. Her enchanting pop music and smooth vocals reminds me of a cross between Corinne Bailey Rae and Leigh Nash. Check out Heidi Happyâs release, Back Together, put out by Little Jig records. It features songs like âBack Togetherâ, and âJust Let It Beâ which are honest, straight forward, testaments to the events in Priskaâs life. Beastie Boys Best Of Grand Royal 12"s!!!

When you’re as big as the Beastie Boys, you have so many releases, and then releases in other countries, formats for which those releases are released on, and limited this and thats. Then finally (but not the end?) you get the Best Of’s. In May, Grand Royal/ Capital released the Best Of Grand Royal 12″ Double Vinyl album which you guys probably by now have all heard in some dope club but I wanted to quickly highlight the CD version. It includes 6 additional tracks including “Rootdown” and “Groove Holmes.” It’s got old stuff and newer stuff. It’s basically grabbing some of my favs from different years and albums then remixing them and then releasing them with even more awesome stuff.

This is no doubt one of the best remix albums around and not just for Beastie. It also includes probably the best remix of “Intergalactic” I’ve ever heard. Okay! We can go on for days about the Beastie but you’ve heard it all, and if not Wiki up. Check out these tracks and be sure to pick up the album/LPs!

Nova Scotian Jon McKiel & The Nature Of Things!

Hailing from Halifax, Jon McKiel and his band have just signed to Wednesday Records! They’ll be rollin’ out a new record on February 12th, 2008 which yes I know is a while from now but who cares. ”The Nature Of Things” and McKiel’s sound reminds me of the seeming subtleties of the Silent Years and The Slip with al the right amounts of pop in it to make for great sing-a-long music. There’s also some good acoustic on the album where I really appreciate McKiel’s vocals. McKiel’s album is mastered by Noah Mitz (Stars, Broken Social Scene, The Dears). The Canadians are taking over the indie music scene with all these great bands. It’s all about that free medical care! Anyways to get you anticipating the album, check out some of these rad tracks!

HIDDEN DETOUR PARTIES w/ Ed Banger Recs & The Villians!!!

I heard about the Hidden Detour Party about two days before the event and I had absolutely no idea what to expect except that there would be lots of dancing. And I guess that’s all we really needed to know! Boost Mobile & Fader put on 2 parties at these hidden locations in LA and the only way to go was to rsvp/text to get a text back of the address on the days of, raver status true. We went Friday night for the Ed Banger crew.

Quick History: Pedro Winter a.k.a. Busy P runs Ed Banger Recs since ’02, it was part of Headbanger Entertainment. Most of the acts are French electro/house DJs and Artists including heavyweights DaftPunk! Friday night was one of the best DJ live sets we have ever heard/seen/experienced. Some of the DJs included Kavinsky, So-Me, Justice, Mehdi and of course Busy P. We danced to mixes, remixes, mashups done way proper on the 1s and 2s of Feist, Beastie, some old school, lots of dance and house beats. You could definitely feel the anticipation from all the boiling point build-ups and follow-the-leader beat drops. LA brings the eclectic crowds out; clubbers to indierockers and Rec heads to some older folks (dance knows no age). I remember Googling the location, street viewing, and realizing there wasn’t really anything there other than some random/regular downtown warehouses. Turned out to be a perfect spot.

These parties of course were lead-ups to Saturday’s L.A. Detour Festival which included Moving Units, The Ed Banger Crew, Teddybears etc. etc. I do say good show.

Cats And Cats And Cats and This Town Needs Guns SPLIT!

Big Scary Monsters Records are bringing us a split album from the two awesome up and coming indie bands, Cats And Cats And Cats and This Town Needs Guns who are both from the U.K. I really like both of the bands’ names. CCC has some sweet girl/boy vocal harmonies mixed with their indie pop, heavy instrumental intros while This Town Needs Guns has similarities of another favorite, Minus the Bear. Each band has 4 tracks on the split and it’s overall an enegery filled, instrument driven sound. While listening to the album, I often times can’t always differentiate between the bands until I hear the vocals. It is pretty rare to find a split where both bands have a good thing going. We’ve been diggin’ releases from Berlin’s Morr Music for quite a while with releases from artists like Electric President, The Go Find, Lali Puna, Ms. John Soda and Seabear to name a few. This past summer they released an awesome various artist compilation called “Music For Hairy Scary Monsters” which consists of previously unreleased and rare electro-pop tracks from Benni Hemm Hemm, The Go Find, Tarwater, ISAN, Múm and Seabear. Overall a lot of good electric stuff. We got some mp3s for you and when you’re done listening go pick it up!

DJ Million Dollar Snake Babies is a math major at Allegheny College in Meadville, PA. He’s also the MD of Allegheny’s radio station, WARC, 90.3 FM. The sophomore effort of the GO! Team is even better than the first album. It’s just powerpacked with a crazy array of samples, tambourines and that super catchy playground rock. We would say it perfectly compliments the GO! Team’s sound progressively moving to a massive party with the kind of album that you could pop into any CD player for a guaranteed good time. Proof Of Youth rocks a 36 minute loud soulful often times 70s era funk tv show theme song except in a much hipper extended form. Just lots of Kick. If you picked up the album, you know exactly what I mean. Check out these songs now!

Broken Social Scene Presents…Kevin Drew..& the BSS Crew

What started as a duo to an awesome some odd number multimember group is now down to the solo works of Kevin Drew, Sort of. ”Spirit If…” came out on Sept. 18th from Arts&Crafts and is supposed to be just the first of many “Broken Social Scene Presents” albums. It was a lot less solo and more of the awesome BSS goodness from the past as Kevin invites former bandmates, contributors, and vocalists to the scene. You got your Leslie Feist, Emily Haines (Metric), Amy Millan (Stars) and a slew of instrumentalists from past projects and meets collaborating into tracks. The Harmonies, the slightly-er softer indie sound, and this overall sonic embeded album rich with lyrics, is an awesome leeway into future projects that keep me wondering who will be on the next album and what to expect as far as sound goes. Either way I just listened to the entire album and it definitely gets our recommendation to go pick it up. Please check out these songs to entice you a little and then go get the album.

It was a relaxing and sorry we left y’all hangin, I got a handful of emails asking for new posts! So here to start us off (if you start your weeks on Sundays) is a new album from Saturday Looks Good To Me. I’m actually a new fan, they’ve been around since 99 and I started diggin’ “Lift Me up” when it dropped a couple years ago. If you guys are unfamiliar, SLGTM definitely brings an indie-pop element with writer/producer Fred Thomas (who used to be in His Name is Alive!)arranging with a talented line-up. Saxophones, synths, handclaps with harmonies and harpischord, display a good span of sound ranging from acoustic to catchy melodies worthy of 60s, 70s 4/4 rock beat ballads.

“Fill Up The Room” is the 4th album out from K Records and will be available for your listening ears on Oct. 23! but you can pre-order now! SLGTM will be going around for an awesome tour so be sure to catch them and for the LA folks, The Echo, Nov. 10th/6pm/$10. By the way, these songs make way good for travelling road trip music. Just Imagine it.
